Watching and studying film is an essential and routine part of enjoying sports and engaging in a growth mindset. This is especially true in the NFL where there is so much downtime between games.

Coaches will show their players video of plays and sequences they didn’t execute to strategize how they can get better, even when things are going very well.

Despite the bleak outlook when the latest season began, things are going well for the Denver Broncos, who have won five of their last six games, and perhaps the unique way they have had their coaches review film is a factor.

“Sean Payton shows us the Broncos’ ‘What Were They Thinking’ plays every Friday. These plays are all around the NFL, so teams can learn from other teams,” Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports wrote for X.

These plays include a Hail Mary pass that the Chicago Bears gave up to the Washington Commanders in Week 8 and a fumble pass that New York Jets’ rookie Malachi Corley had just before diving into the end zone to start Week 9.

Just before Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary pass, Chicago defensive back Tyrique Stevenson couldn’t stick to his defensive duties on the play because he was talking trash to fans in the stands.

It was the kind of unforgivable sin that made coaches pull out their hair in anger.

Broncos’ rookie QB Bo Nix leads a pedestrian offense, but Payton has built a stingy defense that ranks third in both points allowed and total yards allowed per game, which would take any team pretty far.
