In an effort to right past wrongs, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has revamped its process for reconsidering players whose eligibility has expired.
Starting this year, an 11-member panel will review the roster of 183 players to consider honoring them. Three people are nominated as candidates for admission. In this year’s class.
To be included in this group, the last of the previous players must have played a professional football game during the 1999 season.
For the New York Giants, 14 names are being considered, including quarterbacks Phil Simms, Charlie Connery and Jeff Hostetler, running back Otis Anderson, linebacker Carl Banks and tight end Mark Barbaro, who could be on voters’ radar again.
Other Giants players on the list include running back Herschel Walker, flanker Homer Jones, end Del Shoffner, defensive linemen Rosie Greier and Leonard Marshall, defensive backs Jimmy Patton and Everson Walls, and punter Shawn Landetta.
With the Giants celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, it would seem appropriate to sign a player who made the final shortlist this fall.
