It’s all too easy to let the commercialism of the Christmas season take over. But over the years, I’ve learned that the simple things are often the most meaningful. Store-bought gifts certainly have their place, but homemade gift ideas are usually budget-friendly and a great way to give a personalized gift.
We also focus more on experiences than on material gifts (in most cases).
There are so many great gift options for DIY homemade gifts. I hope you’ll consider giving a gift with me in this way. Here are some of my favorite homemade gift ideas and suggestions for simple gift baskets. Whether placed under the Christmas tree or stuffed into a stocking, handmade Christmas gifts are an easy way to spread love to friends and family.
Why make DIY Christmas gifts?
Modern society is overflowing with objects everywhere. We’ve heard that piles of toys, jewelry, and other gifts from Santa make the holidays. Thoughtful gifts like easy DIY projects not only save money but are a simple way to make Christmas extra special.
And there’s no need to beat yourself up if you don’t have time to buy a homemade gift. It’s important to spend quality time with your loved ones. If you’re looking for last-minute gifts, check out our guide to gift giving for the whole family. I also got a lot of great ideas from the gift guide for her in this post.
We’ve divided some of our homemade Christmas gift ideas by type of person (grandparents, kids, men, etc.) so you can easily find a gift for everyone on your list. But there’s a lot of crossover, and some DIY projects in one category might be a good fit for someone else on your list.
Don’t forget to wrap your gift! You can decorate plain paper gift bags. Let the kids help using markers and stickers (if they’re for grandparents). And if you feel really crafty, try making your own reusable fabric gift bags that you can use year after year!
christmas decoration
While you’re making gifts at home, why not make your own Christmas decorations? You can find inexpensive upholstery at your local thrift store or make it yourself. This DIY wreath is made from natural materials like pine, cranberries, and dried oranges. Or try this tutorial for a burlap wreath made from ribbon and string. I also made a burlap wreath to decorate the front door.
How about naturally scented cinnamon pine cones as a table decoration?
And we can’t forget the Christmas cards! Every year I bribe my kids into matching outfits for a Christmas photo that will go on my annual Christmas card. If you’re a crafter, homemade Christmas cards or gift tags are also a great idea.
