19-year-old leaves Liverpool on a free transfer and signs two-year contract with new club – Liverpool FC

Goalkeeper Luke Hewittson has signed for a new club less than a week after his contract with Liverpool expired, with the youngster heading to the second tier.

Hewittson was one of 10 players released by Liverpool at the end of the season and is now the third player to have already moved elsewhere.

The 19-year-old has spent five years on Merseyside since joining from Sunderland in 2019, becoming a popular figure in the academy and regularly calling up for first-team training.

After an impressive loan spell at Stalybridge Celtic last time out – making 42 appearances for the non-league side – he has caught the eye of a number of clubs.

He signed a two-year contract this week and will now join the Fleetwood Academy for pre-season.

He could be involved in the friendly at Squires Gate on Tuesday night, before further warm-up games against Barnswick Town, Blackburn U21s, Clytherow, Thornton Cliftons, Bolton U21s, Leeds U21s and Atherton Collieries.

After hearing the news of his release, Hewittson took to Instagram to pay tribute to Liverpool for giving him the opportunity.

“It’s been an honor to work with some of the greatest players of all time over the past five years,” he wrote.

“I would like to thank all the players, coaches and staff who made this part of my career enjoyable.”

Fellow youngsters Melkamu Frauendorf (Hannover 96) and Francis Guima (Stoke) have also agreed deals elsewhere after leaving Liverpool.

Mateusz Musialowski is attracting interest from Serie A, while Adam Lewis is being watched by Newport County and Tranmere Rovers.

Niall Osborne, Cody Pennington and Nathan Giblin have also been released and are yet to agree terms with new clubs.
