I’m not a morning person. I think it’s okay to put it in the obituary. I’d rather have a 10pm yoga class and a midnight meeting than do anything in the morning. I’ve been saying this all along. But in the end, I don’t care about work, I don’t care about the planet, I don’t care about the economy. So let’s get started. We need to improve our morning routine and make mornings work for us.

Instead of complaining and whining in the morning—and I have—it’s time to bring positive energy into the morning. If I, a notorious morning whiner, can start the year with positive morning habits and a positive mood, so can you.

Here are some of my favorite morning habits to get you started on a good note every morning.

8 Easy Morning Habits for a Better Day

1. Dry brush your body.

It may seem like a goop-y trend, but dry brushing has been a part of Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Every morning, you scrub away the drowsiness and dry skin. Cross your fingers. Rub.

2. Write a diary of your experiences.

It’s well known that we love keeping gratitude journals, but how about we all leave the year behind and make magic happen in the year ahead? There are some things that make a gratitude journal effective. First, there’s muscle memory. If you write “I’m going to buy a house by fall” 35 times, that thought gets ingrained in your subconscious, and yes, you ~ will do Buy a house by fall.

And then there’s the law of attraction. It’s the belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into your life. If you can verbalize what you want and need and repeat that across a page, the thought will be more likely to be embedded in every corner of your brain. Isn’t that worth a try?

3. Turn off your phone alarm.

… or a squeaky, startling, um, alarm. No one wants to be startled awake. Instead, start your morning with a soothing sunrise light and a gentle alarm. If you don’t have work to do and kids to take care of, it’s a much more natural way to wake up.

Nobody loves The New York Times I use apps more than you do, but I also know that I don’t need to open them before 8 a.m. The same goes for email and Instagram. If possible, turn off your phone or put it in airplane mode until you brush your teeth and have enough caffeine to deal with your boss’s annoying requests.
