A Magical Journey: My Christmas Market River Cruise Experience

MONews
15 Min Read

There’s nothing quite like the magic of a European Christmas market. After visiting over 100 Christmas markets across Europe in virtually every possible way, we found that the best way to get there was by river cruise.

But there was one problem. Every river cruise we went on didn’t leave enough time at the destination. And it’s not all-inclusive. As soon as I got on board, I felt like it had been nickeled and darkened. So my husband Michael and I rented our own car and had an amazing two weeks in Germany and France!

When I planned to host a Christmas market cruise, my dream was to create an unforgettable experience that combined the magic of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets with the comfort of luxury travel and the joy of community. And in 2024, that dream became a reality not once, but twice. We chartered two amazing cruises along the Rhine River, bringing together 168 passionate travelers each week to experience the best of Germany and France during the holiday season.

Take a look back at our amazing itinerary, the highlights and what made our 2024 Christmas Market Cruise so special.

Why rent a vessel?

Over the years, Michael and I have traveled to over 100 Christmas markets across Europe. We’ve explored by train, car, and river cruise, and there’s no better way than by boat. why? Because once you unpack the magic comes to you. No need to lug suitcases over cobblestones, navigate crowded train stations, or stress about planning where to stay or what to do next.

charter nico spirit We were able to create a custom itinerary tailored to our group, ensuring maximum time in each destination, the perfect balance of excursions and free time, and plenty of options to explore iconic markets such as Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Cologne.

The best part? The boat was entirely ours, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere where everyone could connect, celebrate, and share the joy of the season.

It was a different atmosphere than usual! We had a group to chat, ask questions, and get to know each other before boarding the ship. I really loved watching friendships form. It was truly so special.

I’ll never forget a woman who said to me while traveling, “I can’t believe I just met those people. It feels like I’ve known them my whole life!”

River Cruise Itinerary: Christmas Market Classics in France and Germany

cologne

We started our trip during the holidays in Cologne, one of the most magical cities in Germany. Famous for its towering Gothic cathedrals, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city was the perfect introduction to the Christmas market experience. Once the world’s tallest building, this iconic landmark houses the relics of the Three Wise Men and provides a breathtaking backdrop to the main souk.

But Cologne is more than just a cathedral. I’m at home 8 unique Christmas marketsEach has its own unique charm. From the twinkling lights of the Angel’s Market to the nautical-themed markets near the Rhine, there is something for everyone here. And of course we couldn’t help but enjoy the local Kölsch beer, served in small glasses at the perfect temperature. This stop will set the mood for festivities for the week ahead!

Koblenz and Arenfels Castle

Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, fascinated us with its combination of historic architecture and picturesque riverside scenery. We walked around the old town, admiring landmarks such as the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), the Schängel Fountain, and the Church of Our Lady. The Christmas markets here were intimate and cozy, offering the opportunity to shop for handicrafts and sip a warm Glühwein.

We could easily hop on and off the ship to experience the Christmas markets or eat some bratwurst!

Optional excursions for those seeking a fairytale experience Arenfels Castle It was a highlight. Set in a scenic vineyard, this neo-Gothic castle was built in the 1200s and offers panoramic views of the Rhine Valley as well as a private Christmas market on the grounds.

The included sampling of local specialties was the cherry on top of a magical day.

We stayed here for one night so it was easy to get on and off the boat and explore more! And we had our favorite German band come on and serenade us into the night!

Rüdesheim and Rhine Gorge

One of my favorite days! In the morning we took the cruise and had time to see the Christmas markets during the day and at night (as we did at every stop!!!)

As we cruised along the Rhine Gorge, we took in breathtaking views. More castles per mile than anywhere else in the world. The towering cliffs and centuries-old forts looked like something straight out of a storybook.

The port city of Rüdesheim charmed us with its half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and festive atmosphere. The included walking tour took us to famous places. DrosselgasseA narrow alley lined with quaint shops and wine bars – a place like something out of a movie! Then it ended in Mechanical Instrument MuseumWe were amazed by this fascinating music-making machine.

We had plenty of time to explore the market in the evening!

Optional excursions provided more enjoyment. Visit a local coffee house and taste their famous coffee. Rüdesheimer CoffeeFortified with Asbach brandy, then tasted at one of the region’s best wineries. It was a perfect blend of history, culture, and fun.

Heidelberg and Mannheim

Heidelberg has stolen my heart again. As someone who has lived here, this is a city I never tire of wanting to share with others. A romantic castle overlooking the Neckar River, a charming old town, and a Christmas market attracting over 10,000 people. 100 festival stalls Made this stop unforgettable. Our walking tour included highlights such as the world’s largest wine barrel, castle ruins, and stunning views of the valley below.

Meanwhile, Mannheim contrasted with its Baroque grandeur and unique grid layout. For those who chose Optional excursion to Bad DürkheimAn in-depth wine tasting showcased the region’s amazing varietals, along with local sausages and sparkling wines. Yes, I drank wine at 10 in the morning and it was great!!

Strasbourg and Black Forest

Self-proclaimed Strasbourg capital of christmasIt truly lived up to its name. with that 100 foot tall christmas treeWith over 300 stalls and top-of-the-line Christmas decorations, you felt like you had entered a winter wonderland. Our guided tours include must-see attractions such as: Notre Dame Cathedral and the picturesque Petite France district, with its astronomical clock and half-timbered houses lined with canals.

Just wondering about the streets can be an adventure. Great food (try the mulled orange wine with honey – it’s so delicious!) and just enjoy it. The streets are literally explosive.

There is also a Baccarat chandelier. On the street!

optional excursions black forest It was equally fascinating. we are Vogzbauernhof Open Air MuseumWe learned about traditional Schwarzwald culture, from cuckoo clocks to folk costumes, and enjoyed a slice of the famous Black Forest cake.

stop gengenbachA magical finishing touch has been added to the world’s largest Advent calendar. I especially like it because… it has butterbeer!

Mainz and Wiesbaden

I think the Mainz market is very underrated. everyone. I love chimney cakes, but they’re so hit or miss. Mainz officially has the best I’ve tried! The food in Mainz is unreal.

Mainz is a fascinating combination of history and holiday atmosphere. The hometown of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the modern printing press, is significant. Gutenberg Museum Discover the two original books of the Bible that revolutionized the world here! The Christmas market held here is 1,000 year old cathedralI felt like I was entering a fairy tale.

Wiesbaden, available as an optional tour, offered a more sophisticated experience. Known for its magnificent architecture and luxury, this spa town charms us with its amazing Christmas markets and festive atmosphere. The towering spiers and ornate buildings were a feast for the eyes.

Cologne (again!)

Our trip came full circle as we returned to Cologne. This city, with its amazing markets and festive atmosphere, was the perfect place to say goodbye. Whether exploring the different themed markets, enjoying live music or sipping one last glass of Glühwein, we’ve enjoyed every last moment of the magic of the holidays.

We said “Auf Wiedersehen” with our hearts and memories that will last a lifetime.

Onboard Experience: Floating Christmas Wonderland

Our ships were more than just a means of transportation. It was our home for a week and was an integral part of the experience. Built in 2021, the ship has a striking boutique hotel feel with its modern design, expansive windows, and luxurious amenities.

  • meal: With three restaurants on board, the food was truly exceptional. Every meal was satisfying, from casual fare to multi-course meals inspired by local cuisine.
  • drink: All drinks were included (yes, even the finest alcohol!). This meant we could toast the season with wine, cocktails or beer whenever we wanted.
  • relaxation: The ship offers a variety of areas to unwind, including the sun deck, sauna or cozy lounge with panoramic views of the castles and cliffs of the Rhine River.

Please wait a moment for your food. It’s truly a work of art and so delicious! One of the reasons we chose this cruise line and ship is because it is one of the best foods I have ever had!

The gala dinner on board was another highlight. Imagine a beautifully decorated dining room, delicious food, festive music, and a room filled with laughter and new friends.

People: The Heart of Cruise

One of the most magical parts of hosting this trip was the amazing people who joined us. Whether traveling alone or with a loved one, everyone brings their own unique stories, excitement, and energy to cruise travel.

Our guests ranged from first-time visitors to Europe to seasoned market-goers, with strangers becoming friends over the weekend. The camaraderie on board extended to excursions, dinners and even late-night chats in the lounge.

For me, this sense of community made the trip truly unforgettable.

I’ve already received messages about people gathering, meeting, and visiting each other! The friendships formed are incredible.

some highlights

I danced to the band, our cruise director Mariia read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (I cried!), we took pictures by the Christmas tree, the crew danced with us on Satalana, and the newly engaged I will never forget toasting a married couple. .

We soaked up as much Christmas spirit as we could!

There was a Christmas market stall in Rudesheim selling Amazon returns… Of course, some of our group bought a few packages. One was a safety vest. They wore them every night. One was the banner we put up.

As I got off the ship, I helped remove the banner with the help of the crew. “Your group was the best this year!” he told me

I have to agree.

Joy, joy, happiness, memories.

Looking back on our 2024 Christmas Market Cruise, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible group of travelers who joined us, the seamless coordination of our cruise partners, and the magical destinations (and many people) who welcomed us with open arms. Glühwein).

This trip was more than just a cruise. It was a celebration of the season, an opportunity to connect with like-minded travelers, and an experience that reminded us all of the joy and magic of Christmas.
