But there will not only be 20 drivers ready for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, there will also be reserve drivers for each team on hand should their services be called upon.

What does an F1 reserve driver do?

A reserve driver is a driver who is ready to replace one of an F1 team’s main line-up if needed. This can happen if the driver suffers an illness or injury. For example, Ferrari enlisted the help of reserve Ollie Bearman when Carlos Sainz contracted appendicitis at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

This means prospective drivers attend most, if not all, of the Grands Prix on their schedule. However, the role also includes other responsibilities, including working on simulators at team headquarters, attending engineering meetings, and occasional testing.
