Apple halts iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pros, after bricking reports

Apple has temporarily paused the rollout of iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pro models, one of the most expensive iPads the company sells, after some users complained that the update was bricking their devices. Apple acknowledged the issue in a statement to Engadget, saying, “We have temporarily pulled the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models to address an issue affecting a small number of devices.”

The issue was first reported via Reddit, where a growing number of M4 iPad Pro users have described finding their iPads unusable after attempting to install the latest version of iPadOS. “At some point during the update, my iPad just turned off and wouldn’t turn on again,” said user tcorey23. Posted From Reddit: “I just took it to the Apple Store and they confirmed it was completely broken, and even though I have Apple Care they said I had to send it in to a technician to get it replaced.”

Another Reddit user named Lisegot wrote that the Apple Store he took his bricked M4 iPad Pro to was out of stock with a replacement unit, meaning he would have to wait 5-7 days for a working iPad. “No one specifically apologized, and they even implied that there was no way to know if an update caused this,” they wrote.

It’s rare for a software bug to cause your iPad to malfunction. Arstechnicaany First reported This article points out that if you are having trouble with a software update, you can usually put your iPad into recovery mode.

If you own an M4 iPad Pro, Apple will no longer be offering iPadOS 18 until it fixes the issue. It’s unclear when that will be fixed.
