Apple Music now lets subscribers transfer playlists to YouTube Music (and later from YouTube Music).

Thanks to the recent update Apple Music Subscribers can now transfer playlists to their YouTube Music profiles. This new feature was introduced very quietly, as Apple didn’t announce it through the usual channels. People only found out about this tool after they noticed a change to one of the following: Company support documents.

Subscribers must meet certain requirements before transferring anything. First, sign up for Apple Music or iTunes Match Subscriptions. Users are also active YouTube Music Account. Fortunately, you don’t need a YouTube Music subscription, so at least transferring your playlists won’t cost you much.

Assuming everything is in order, Apple will tell you to go to their site. Data and Privacy PageSign in to your Apple ID account and select “Transfer a copy of your data.” The next screen will give you the option to move your playlists from Apple Music to YouTube Music. According to reportsThis process may take some time to complete, and you will receive an email when it is complete.

There are a few limitations to be aware of. According to Apple, the only playlists that can be moved are ones you’ve created yourself. Non-collaborative shared or curated playlists can’t be jumped. Organizational folders and music files aren’t shared either. If a song isn’t on YouTube Music, you can’t listen to it. And non-music audio files, like podcasts, won’t transfer.

As of this writing, it appears that you can only transfer playlists from YouTube Music to Apple Music. Second supporting document Currently, it is claimed that this is possible. First, you need to go to Google Takeout and follow the instructions there to prepare to transfer your YouTube Music playlist. We applaud Apple for being more friendly to third-party services. This is a huge win for users. Users get the freedom to move their favorite tracks to other platforms, but they don’t have to start over from scratch. In our experience, recreating playlists is a huge pain. It would be better if Apple Music partnered with other platforms like Spotify, but we don’t think that will happen anytime soon.
