Fighting against book bans
Republican efforts to silence our stories have led to book bans reaching record levels across the country. Extremists have attempted to ban or restrict thousands of classic books, primarily texts and books that highlight racism, anti-Semitism, and stories centered around LGBTQ+ and black experiences. MoveOn members are rallying to fight back.
MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile has embarked on two multi-state road trips in 2023.We’re distributing thousands of banned books for free to communities affected by book bans, sounding the alarm about censorship, and energizing voters.
We fought censorship by creating the Artists Against Book Bans Campaign, an initiative we led with beloved “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton. Nearly 200 writers, artists and creative leaders, including Ariana Grande, Judy Blume and Padma Lakshmi, signed the open letter and shared the campaign, reaching millions of Americans.
Nearly half a million MoveOn members signed the petition. A national and 11 regional campaign campaigned against the book ban.
MoveOn 25 Member Summit
october, We brought together hundreds of grassroots leaders and volunteers from across the country for the MoveOn 25 Member Summit.. During the two-day event, we celebrated MoveOn’s 25 years of impact and began preparing for the 2024 elections.
As the summit began, the youth drumline got members excited. there was 50 speakers, 25 sessions Driven by MoveOn members, partners and employees. Topics ranged from organizational strategy to LGBTQ+ campaigns and even artificial intelligence. Speakers included Working Families Party Leader Maurice Mitchell, Color of Change Leader Rashad Robinson, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, and former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes.

2024 Election Plan: Key Races
This year, MoveOn members will come together for the largest voter persuasion program in MoveOn history. With your support, MoveOn is investing more than $32 million in presidential, House, and Senate races. Together, we will work to re-elect President Biden, take back the House, protect the Senate majority, and protect our democracy from the twice-impeached and criminally indicted Donald Trump.
By 2024, democracy, abortion, and other basic freedoms are under threat. The stakes are higher than ever, but the powerful MoveOn movement, with millions of participants, is meeting the moment.
Our 2024 map includes the top presidential battleground states, swing House districts, and key Senate races we’re mobilizing for. MoveOn does the following:
- It plays a major role in the Biden-Harris ticket campaign. They are located in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, and Ohio.
- Give Democrats their best chance at flipping a handful of seats to take back the House.—Aim for more than 24 seats.
- Protect our razor-thin Senate majority.—Invests in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio.
We will talk to voters early and talk to them where they are. We will continue to use proven voter contact strategies including house parties, targeted digital advertising, phone banking, and polling. And we’ll use triple voting, a research-backed method of voter participation to organize voters and hold them accountable for voting by having three friends or family members make a voting plan.
Based on our issue-first strategy, we will target people who voted for the first time or have become more active since the 2016 election, and connect with them at least three times through multiple channels to increase influence. MoveOn will narrow down young voters and those who need to be persuaded to vote again from a surge voter population of more than 11 million across targeted regions.
But a third-party candidate could ruin the election results. MoveOn has been working with allies across the political spectrum to sound the alarm and expose third-party tickets that have no chance of winning and every chance of putting Trump back in the White House.
In every election, MoveOn and our members mobilize communities, increase voter participation, and strengthen the progressive movement. It is no exaggeration to say that the future of our democracy depends on this year. Through your continued partnership, we will unite to defeat Trump once and for all, elect progressive candidates, and move our country forward.
