Art for the Ocean: Help Protect the Deep Sea from Mining!

At the end of July, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is due to convene its board and general assembly in Kingston, Jamaica. At the last meeting in March, the Deep Sea Mining (DSM) industry alliance tried unsuccessfully to block Greenpeace from future meetings. Now, they are preparing another push to get approval for deep sea mining. But we can’t just sit back and watch this happen. We need your help to stop it!

The deep sea is home to a myriad of mysterious creatures, many of which we know very little about. Allowing deep-sea mining to proceed could lead to the disappearance of countless species, including those yet to be discovered. forever.

Let’s look at the ghost octopus, for example. This fascinating creature was only discovered in 2016.And one of the few things we know about it is that it relies on manganese nodules to lay its eggs, which is exactly what the mining industry is trying to develop.

Greenpeace Canada activists installed a 48-by-30-foot octopus made of more than 1,000 LED lights on Ottawa’s Maple Island to draw attention to deep-sea mining. The ghost octopus held a banner from its tentacles that read, “Stop deep-sea mining!” and a speech bubble that said, “Protect my home, Minister Joly!” in English and “Protégez ma maison, ministre Joly!” in French. © Andrew Jehan / Greenpeace

We call on all Greenpeace volunteers, supporters and ocean lovers to join us in creating a powerful symbol of resistance. And it’s a fun activity for kids of all ages! Create a ghost octopus rock garden by drawing an octopus on gravel, stones or rocks. This art will be a tribute to the amazing creatures that could be extinct due to deep sea mining.

Here’s what you can do:

Paint for the deep sea: Take some pebbles, stones or rocks, paint them with eco-friendly paint and draw an octopus. You can be as creative and colorful as you want!

Create a rock garden: Place the painted octopus in a prominent location (garden, park, local community center, etc.). Share your photos on social media with the hashtag #StopDeepSeaMining and tag Greenpeace Canada and the petition link: https://act.gp/4cpPf2S
