Subscribers + Exclusive Interviews — As NATO leaders gather this week to mark its 75th anniversary and set a course for the future, NATO itself has come under fire for moving too slowly to respond to Russian aggression. NATO has been praised for its unity following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a unity it has lacked since the end of the Cold War, but critics say NATO and its members have been too timid in their response, and fears of a NATO-Russia conflict have too often hindered aid to Ukraine.

Cipher Brief’s International correspondent Ia Meurmishvili said there was little to celebrate as NATO turned 75. “I am not in the mood to celebrate,” he said, and criticized NATO members for being slow to make decisions on sending military aid to Kiev.
