Blinken discusses Syria’s future on unannounced visit to Iraq

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said he had discussed the situation in Syria with the Iraqi prime minister, including efforts to encourage the country’s transition to an inclusive, non-sectarian government.

We spoke, of course, about the situation in Syria and the confidence of many countries in the region and beyond. As Syria transitions from the Assad dictatorship to democracy, of course it transitions in a way that protects everything. This is a Syrian minority that wants to create an inclusive, non-sectarian government and that does not in any way become a platform for terrorism. We are determined to prevent Daesh from reemerging. Together, the United States and Iraq have had tremendous success in wresting away the caliphate that Daesh created years ago, and now that we have put Daesh back in the box, we can no longer let it out. And we are determined to make sure that doesn’t happen.
