Formula One world champion Jenson Button has warned McLaren driver Lando Norris’ constant self-criticism could be detrimental to his performances.
Norris has expressed disappointment in recent racing, particularly after a strategic error cost him the British Grand Prix win.
The winner of this year’s Canadian Grand Prix at Silverstone expressed his disappointment at McLaren’s inability to capitalise on their strong race pace, blaming the team’s mistakes and his own performance for the misfortune.
The shortfall allowed future Mercedes race winner Lewis Hamilton to beat his rivals to claim a record ninth British Grand Prix win.
“We’ve always been there or near there, but the car has never been there, and I think we have to keep working as a team,” Norris said. “I have to keep doing my job and just try to put it together.”
Norris was visibly frustrated after missing out on victory at his home Grand Prix, while Button
He warned the McLaren Charger not to dwell too much on his mistakes and stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset.
“Lando needs to be a little careful about his feelings,” Button said. Sky Sports F1.
“He was incredibly underwhelming in the last race and could easily get out of control in this one.
“We know how important it is to keep your head in the right place. He’s so talented that we don’t want to put ourselves down so much that we don’t get back up there in the next game.”
Button’s advice is a reminder that mental resilience is essential to success in Formula 1. The F1 veteran also pointed to the psychological aspect of competition, suggesting that showing vulnerability can be detrimental.
“You also don’t want to show your competitors that you’re that discouraged,” he added. “That’s a weakness you don’t want to show.
“It’s great that he expresses his feelings honestly, and it’s good for the viewers too.
“But I’m only thinking about the competitive aspect. He shouldn’t let himself get down like that.”
