Canadian Open: Jannik Sinner knocked out by Andrey Rublev

World number one Yannick Sinner was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open by Russia’s Andrey Rublev.

The world number eight won 6-3 1-6 6-2 over Italy’s top seed in a match that was interrupted by rain in Montreal.

Sinner has been struggling with a right hip injury, and the 22-year-old has been massaging the area frequently, which could be a concern for him as the US Open begins in two weeks.

“It was a really good fight. Jannik is an incredible player and he has been unbelievable for two years. I was just hoping to fight him,” the 26-year-old said.

Friday’s match was canceled due to rain and both players played their last 16 matches earlier that day. Sinner beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-4 6-3 and Rublev defeated American qualifier Brandon Nakashima 6-2 6-2.

Rublev will face another Italian, Matteo Arnaldi, in the semi-finals after beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4 7-5.

Defending the title at the Toronto Women’s Championship Jessica Pegula He advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4 7-5 win over fellow American Peyton Stearns.

Pegula will play Diana Schneider She won 4-6 6-1 6-4 against fellow Russian Lyudmila Samsonova in the last four.

Amanda Anisimova The American, who returned to tennis in late 2023 after a nine-month hiatus due to mental health issues, beat Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka 6-4 6-2.

Anisimova will face Emma NavarroHe defeated another American, Taylor Townsend, 6-3 7-6(7-5).

The US Open in New York begins on August 26.
