Chelsea striker Sam Kerr has signed a two-year contract extension with the club.

The 30-year-old was close to becoming a free agent this summer but will now remain in west London until 2026.

Australia captain Kerr has scored 99 goals in 128 appearances for the Blues since joining from Chicago Red Stars in 2019.

She has played a key role in Chelsea’s rise to prominence in the WSL over the past five years.

Under Emma Hayes, Kerr was part of the team that won five consecutive league titles as well as three FA Cups, two League Cups and the Community Shield.

The only trophy missing from her collection is the Champions League, which she will be hoping to win under new coach Sonia Bompastor.

Chelsea initially posted a video on social media of Kerr reading what appeared to be a farewell note.

But minutes later, they revealed that the prolific forward would remain at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s a really exciting and proud moment,” she told the club’s website.

“Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me.

“I’m really excited to keep working and try to win trophies.”

Kerr missed most of the 2023-24 season due to injury, but is hoping to return to his best form in 2024-25.

General manager Paul Green added: “I am delighted that Sam has extended his contract with the club.

“Sam is a leader and one of the best strikers and goalscorers in the world.

“She has been very important to our success and we look forward to her return from injury next season.”
