Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is confusing possession pursuit with advancing to the WNBA. During a press conference Thursday, he addressed recent reports that Kansas City wants a WNBA franchise.

“We want to bring basketball to Kansas City in general, and then the WNBA and the success they’ve had over the last few seasons, it’s a no-brainer,” Mahomes said. “I mean, trying to get a WNBA team in Kansas City into this fan base, you know the University of Kansas, Kansas basketball, the Chiefs, the city of Kansas City are going to come out. It’s going to fill the stadium.”

On Wednesday ESPN’s Adam Schefter We report in detail on Mahomes and his ownership group’s recent interest in a potential WNBA franchise coming to Kansas City following the KC Current’s recent success in making the playoffs in the NWSL.

“So it’s been great that we’ve been able to build this women’s soccer team here at (KC) Current. They’re in the playoffs right now and you can see it in the support they have,” Mahomes said. “So let’s try to get the same type of ownership group involved here as a WNBA team. They’ve done it the right way. I want to continue to work with them to take the next step in the WNBA.”

For years, Mahomes has been vocal about bringing more professional sports franchises to Kansas City, including an NBA franchise as temporary housing during the Toronto Raptors’ COVID-19 restricted season in 2021.

“Kansas City has been a great place for me. This is where I call home, this is where I made my home, and this is where I’m going to be for a long time,” Mahomes said. “So I think I just want to get involved in the community as much as possible and love sports. I know how much the city loves sports, so I’m going to bring a lot of sports here and show how great Kansas City is, not only as a city, but the people of the city as well.”

After taking business classes and working with groups to gain ownership of several sports franchises, Mahomes hopes his efforts will encourage young girls, including his daughter, to participate in sports.

“I started early with the Royals and Sporting Kansas City and Current, and now I want a WNBA team to come here. This is for life after football,” Mahomes said. “So I can still make an impact in any sport and at the same time show my daughter that she can follow her dreams and go to the next game, whatever that dream may be.”
