The Washington Commanders suffered another major blow after their Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Second-year cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. will undergo surgery to repair a torn UCL in his thumb.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport wrote to X that “by getting this procedure done now, Forbes will be able to fix an issue that has been plaguing him all season.”

Forbes, a first-round pick and All-American from Mississippi, was a rising star in Washington early in his NFL career, so the news is hard for Commanders fans to swallow.

As a rookie, Forbes recorded 11 passes defended, 38 tackles and an interception.

At 23, he has many more years of playing ahead of him, and the surgery could be a wise decision for his long-term health.

Now Commanders head coach Dan Quinn will have to rely on Benjamin Saint-Just, Noah Igbinogene and Michael Davis to hold down the fort.

The problem is, losing Forbes isn’t a good time to be losing him, as the defense completely fell apart against Baker Mayfield and the Bucs in Week 1.

If Washington needs help at the position, veteran cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Javien Howard are still available in free agency.

With Quinn’s experience as a defensive coach, the Commanders are expected to make sound decisions on how to recruit a cornerback.
