Health experts have revealed a type of herb that may help prevent type 2 diabetes.

BristolLive reports research showing that fenugreek contributes to blood sugar control.

Fenugreek, also known as Trigonella foenum-graecum, is a common ingredient in Indian food. It is also valued for its medicinal properties, with studies linking it to lowering cholesterol and inflammation and weight loss.

Fenugreek seeds contain a large amount of soluble fiber, which helps lower blood sugar levels by slowing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates.

A study conducted in India found that adding 100 grams of defatted fenugreek seed powder to the daily diet of patients with type 1 diabetes significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels.

It also improved glucose tolerance and lowered total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Another study found that consuming 2.5 grams of fenugreek twice daily for three months reduced blood sugar levels in people with mild diabetes, but not in those with severe diabetes.

Researchers also found that fenugreek seeds help lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

However, you should talk to your doctor and diabetes health care team before using fenugreek as a treatment for your condition, especially if you are taking medication.
