Cowell replaces Krack as Aston Martin team principal.

Andy Cowell is the new team principal of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team following a restructuring that saw Mike Krack take on a trackside role.

Krack had been Aston Martin team leader since joining in 2022, but was replaced by Cowell, who was already group CEO, “as part of a shift to leadership clarity and a more flat structure”. Cowell only joined in October last year and was highly regarded following his previous role as managing director of Mercedes’ powertrain company, High Performance Powertrains (HPP).

Aston Martin said it would split its aerodynamics, engineering and performance departments into a trackside team and a factory-based team, both of which would report to Cowell.

The change in team leadership saw Krack assume trackside responsibilities as chief trackside officer. This means his jurisdiction no longer extends to factory employees. This falls under the remit of new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Enrico Cardile, a former Ferrari technical director who has been brought on board this year to create “a team that can now focus 100% of its time on the competitive challenge of creating a new race car.” Supervise. .”

As part of the restructuring, experienced performance director Tom McCullough will step away from the trackside F1 team and take on a leadership position within the wider group with a focus on expanding the team’s other racing categories.

“I have been understanding and evaluating our performance over the past three months and have been impressed by the commitment, commitment and hard work of this team,” Cowell said. “With the completion of the AMR Technology Campus and transition to a fully operational team in 2026, together with our strategic partners Honda and Aramco, we are on our way to becoming a championship-winning team. “This organizational change is a natural evolution of our multi-year plan and we are very excited about the future.”

The restructuring follows changes to the technical department at the end of last season. Dan Fallows has left his position as Technical Director and moved into a Group role.

At the time, McCullough said this was due to the team’s lack of progress in the team’s in-season car development, with Aston Martin finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship and earning 94 points in 2024 compared to 280 the previous year. In both cases, Aston started the year with a more competitive car than it finished the season with.

The organizational changes come ahead of Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin as managing technology partner later this year.
