Crispy Baked Chicken Wings – A Beautiful Mess

MONews
7 Min Read

To be honest, we have about three meals that we order pretty frequently. And one of them is chicken wings! I love ordering chicken wings for delivery, but it’s also nice to know how to make your favorite meals at home. Crispy oven-baked chicken wings are healthier, cheaper, and just as delicious as takeout. You will love them.

Homemade chicken wings can be deep-fried, oven-baked, or air-fried. But the recipe I’m sharing here makes super crispy wings with minimal effort and no special equipment other than a baking sheet and oven. This chicken wings recipe is delicious served as is or with your favorite dipping sauce.

Crispy Baked Chicken Wings – A Beautiful Mess

ingredient

  • Chicken Wings – Sometimes Also Called “Party Wings”
  • baking powder
  • salt and pepper
  • seasoning*
  • Olive oil – or other cooking oil

*For seasoning, I often use my favorite mix called “Pappy’s”, but you can literally use any seasoning mix or make your own. And if you want to keep it simple, just use good old Lawry’s seasoned salt.

You may also want a sauce to add to the wings after baking, such as buffalo sauce, barbecue sauce, hot sauce like Frank’s, or any other wing sauce you prefer. If you use hot sauce, you can also eat it with ranch dressing.

How to Grill Chicken Wings

I highly prefer buying the wings already split. Sometimes these are labeled “party wings”. However, if necessary, you can divide chicken wings into three parts: tips (to be discarded or used in other recipes, such as homemade stock), drumettes, and flats, or winglets.

In a small bowl, mix together the baking powder, salt, pepper, and seasoning you are using. Pat the chicken pieces dry. Then toss in the dry rub mix.

Lightly oil a baking sheet and place the chicken wings in a single layer. It’s okay to lightly touch, but they should not overlap. Use more than one baking sheet if necessary.

Bake in oven at 425°F for 20 minutes. Then turn each piece over and lightly oil it. Bake for another 20 minutes (40 minutes total). Remove from baking sheet and serve warm. If you like, you can also use 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup of sauce to drizzle over your favorite sauce.

Tips and Notes

  • If you want a specific spice blend other than salt and pepper, try this: 1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
  • I typically serve 1 pound of chicken wings per adult. This recipe makes for 2 pounds so my husband and I will make it for dinner. Carrots and celery are also added on the side for a fresh crunch. 🙂
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil to make cleanup easier.
  • Not as crispy as you want? Bake for 1-2 minutes. I don’t generally think this is necessary, but every oven is a little different.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. I will heat it in the microwave or air fryer. This works best for wings that are not drenched in sauce.
