Dan Hurley ‘not a done deal’ to Lakers as UConn may improve contract offer

Dan Hurley is scheduled to meet with the Los Angeles Lakers this weekend to discuss his position as their head coach, but the two sides still have work to do to build their relationship.

“I think it’s important for the Lakers to try to shut down this weekend,” Brian Windhorst said on Get Up in a meeting previously reported by Adrian Wojnarowski. “I know there is momentum for this, as Woj said, but it was emphasized to me that this is not a done deal. There is still relationship building and conversation that needs to take place and that will probably happen for the next couple of days.”

Hurley signed a contract extension with UConn in June 2023, but has not signed since his second straight championship. However, UConn recently extended Geno Auriemma as head coach of the women’s team. UConn could offer Hurley an improved financial offer to entice him to remain as head coach rather than leave for the Lakers.

“I know UConn now has a chance to bounce back,” Windhorst added. “One of the things that hasn’t happened since their second championship, UConn wasn’t able to finalize a contract extension with Dan Hurley for two months after they won that title. And I’m just saying, ‘This week, they’re giving their legendary women’s basketball coach, Geno Auriemma “So now UConn is trying to improve their offer to give him another option while evaluating what would certainly be a lucrative offer.”

Windhorst also mentioned Hurley’s comments about extension talks with UConn and the school’s chances of retaining him.
