Disney Shuts Down Slack After July Data Breach

The Walt Disney Company The company has been phasing out Slack for internal communications for several months following a hack that exposed more than a terabyte of company data to the public.

The company had already begun transitioning to a new internal “simplified, enterprise-wide collaboration tool,” according to a memo from Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston obtained by CNBC, but on Thursday formally notified employees and cast members that most business units will stop using Slack by the end of Disney’s next fiscal quarter.

Disney told investors in August that the summer data breach, which included financial information, computer code and details about undisclosed projects, was not expected to have a material impact on the company’s operations or financial results.

Disney and its representatives salesforce, Slack’s owner did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

“Our security is very robust,” said Marc Benioff, Salesforce CEO. I spoke to Bloomberg at the company’s annual Dreamforce conference this week.

“Companies also need to take the right steps to prevent phishing attacks and block social engineering of their employees,” he added. “So we can do our part, but our customers need to do theirs too.”

Benioff noted that Disney continues to leverage Salesforce products in other aspects of its business, including Disney Stores, Disney Guides, sales and service operations, and call centers.
