It’s a new year with many difficult challenges in the field of national security, from global conflicts to terrorist threats, cyber warfare and coordinated anti-Western efforts by the so-called ‘authoritarian axis’. While policymakers address or attempt to address these issues, some experts worry that there are systemic problems and that the current structure and approach of the U.S. defense establishment is making it more difficult for the nation to address its numerous challenges.

Gilman Louie, who served as the founding CEO of In-Q-Tel, a CIA-funded technology investment firm, and has 30 years of experience in national security and investments, including time at the Department of Defense. This is the opinion of Innovation Committee. Louie is currently the co-founder, CEO, and managing partner of America’s Frontier Fund, a self-described “deep tech fund” dedicated to advancing U.S. national security interests.
