Extinction Rebellion (XR) has written to senior executives of UK-based insurance companies urging them to stop covering fossil fuels.

The environmental activist group sent the letter Monday as it prepared. Starting October 28th, protests will take place in London and across the UK for a week..

The letter urged insurance company bosses to “please pledge to stop new oil, coal and gas. “Otherwise you will face action and protests,” he said.

XR said the public would join activists in targeting insurers through non-violent action in the City of London.

After three days of intensive action in the capital, the campaign will spread to insurers’ offices in towns and cities across the UK.

The letter reads: “We must make a public declaration within 14 days from today that we will stop providing insurance coverage for all new fossil fuel projects.

“If you do not make such a declaration by October 28, your business in the UK will become the focus of a week of widespread non-violent direct action by thousands of XR activists and their allies in London and across the UK. , and for the weeks and months that followed.”

It comes after XR staged a similar protest targeting City of London insurance companies in February as part of a global week of action that saw dozens of actions taken in 27 cities around the world to highlight the insurance industry’s role in the climate crisis.

Many insurance companies make money by underwriting fossil fuel projects such as oil rigs and coal mines.

However, the industry faces serious challenges from global warming as increasingly severe impacts increase liability risks and raise costs for certain types of insurance.
