Elliott praises Slot’s ‘elegant’ style of play as new era begins at Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has described new manager Arne Slot’s playing style as “elegant” compared to Jurgen Klopp’s.

The Dutchman took over from the German this summer and has had a long history on Merseyside, winning the Champions League and Premier League during his time at the club.

But the new era for Slots began with a 1-0 win over Real Betis in pre-season, with Elliott starting the game and seeing first-hand how the new manager wants his team to play.

“It’s a very elegant Dutch style, really nice,” he said ahead of the match against Premier League rivals Arsenal.

“The style of play has changed a lot. Now possession is more important.

“The players are excited, we play a certain pattern, there’s a good atmosphere around the team and the players are excited to apply it in the game.

“It’s a new beginning for everyone. I think it’s exciting, not nerve-wracking.

“We think [will learn it] To be honest, it was very fast. There were a few moments of amazing free-flowing football in the last game.

“It’s still preseason and only the first few games so we have to continue to trust what they are teaching us.

“Even if things aren’t going well, you have to keep going. [immediately] “Because everything is new.”

With Liverpool’s squad lacking a striker, Elliott was slotted into the number 10 role alongside Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot believes both players can solidify their places in a more advanced midfield role and has even suggested Elliott could break into the England squad under his tutelage.

Elliott added:

“You can say whatever you want, but it’s up to me to work hard and perform well in training and in games. So it’s my job. There’s no one to blame but me.

“I just wanted to come back early and get used to the new style of play and meet the coaching staff and the manager for the first time.

“I had a chance to get up and run in the preseason and I think I did that. I just have to keep going and building.”

Liverpool’s next pre-season test is against Arsenal, one of two teams they trailed in the Premier League last season.
