‘End this war’: Biden calls for Gaza ceasefire in final UN speech

The world must not retreat from the horrors of October 7. Every country, every nation, has the right and responsibility to ensure that such attacks never happen again. 250 innocent people were taken hostage. I met the families of those hostages. I mourned with them. They are going through hell. Innocent civilians in Gaza are going through hell. Thousands and thousands of people, including aid workers, were killed. So many families were forced out, crammed into tents, facing terrible humanitarian conditions. They did not ask for this war that Hamas started. I proposed a ceasefire and hostage negotiations with Qatar and Egypt. The UN Security Council supported it. Now is the time for the parties to set the terms. Bring the hostages home and free Israel and Gaza from Hamas’s grip. Ease the suffering in Gaza and end this war.
