Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro ordered to pay damages in bed-theft lawsuit

The Brazilian government has been ordered to pay around $2,600 (£2,025) in damages to former President Jair Bolsonaro after he was accused of stealing furniture from the presidential residence.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva publicly accused Bolsonaro of taking more than 260 items when he emptied the Alvorada Palace, including a “bed.”

Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle Bolsonaro later revealed that they had stored the public furniture in storage during the far-right politician’s three-year term from 2019 to 2022, and wanted to decorate the residence to their own taste.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Bolsonaro family to pay compensation for “moral harm” caused by allegations that numerous items were stolen from the palace.

The court also ordered the president to publish a retraction in a lawsuit filed by Bolsonaro and his wife, according to a ruling seen by AFP.

The state’s legal office told AFP it would appeal Tuesday’s ruling.

Jair Bolsonaro still faces other legal challenges, including an investigation into whether he incited rioters to storm key government buildings after he narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election to a leftist rival.

He expressed “regret” over the riot, He denies that he caused it..
