The Aaron Rodgers-Garrett Wilson duo has been quiet so far this season.
In three games, Wilson has 15 receptions on 26 targets for 150 yards and one touchdown after two seasons of over 1,000 yards without Rodgers.
He leads the team in yards and receptions, but their chemistry has yet to shine.
Wilson spoke on Friday about how he and Rodgers are more in tune this week ahead of Sunday’s game against the Broncos at MetLife Stadium. “Then now I guess I’ll have to do it on Sunday. That’s when it matters. If you had asked me before last week’s game I would have thought we were in the same position. So I decided to do it on Sunday. “That’s when it matters.”
Part of Wilson’s less-than-sparkly start is due to him facing some of the league’s top corners in recent weeks. The Titans’ L’Jarius Sneed and the Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez, along with Denver’s Patrick Surtain on Sunday.
Wilson was often double-teamed against top cornerbacks with safeties.
“Yes. Every time they make that look, you can feel the frustration,” Wilson said. “But I have come to believe that we know how to answer on the other side, and that is what we have found. Yeah, it’s definitely disappointing. I take pride in what I do, making plays and things like that. But if they want to give me that look, we have to do our best to deal with it. “It means there are fewer numbers at the other end of the field and we have to take advantage of that.”
Wilson’s presence on the field not only opened up opportunities in the run game for Breece Hall and rookie Braelon Allen, but also gave new looks to Allen Lazard, Mike Williams and Tyler Conklin.
Lazard, who had 148 yards and three touchdowns, looked completely reshaped as a two-wideout option as the weeks went by.
Conklin and Williams added 93 and 34 yards, respectively, against the Patriots, while Hall and Allen created a versatile rushing duo.
Wilson said he still “loves” the contest and knows the Jets plan to target him if given a one-on-one opportunity.
“It’s just a process. You have to try to put him in situations where he can be number one in progression. He takes on a lot of parts and mixes up his looks. So we have a lot of work to do. Give him a chance to move and we want to give him the ball early, but it’s just a process,” Rodgers said of Wilson on Wednesday. “He has to be patient, we have to be patient. “We can’t force it.”
CJ Mosley did not practice on Friday and it is unclear whether he will play in Sunday’s game against the Broncos.
