With skipper Rohit Sharma back in the squad, Gambhir faces a difficult decision regarding his playing XI.
The impressive partnership of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first Test poses a challenge to Rohit’s batting position.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill made his comeback from injury and consolidated his place at the third spot.
On the bowling front, India chose Washington Sundar over experienced spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the Perth Test.
Gambhir now has to decide whether to continue with this strategy or rely on the experience of Ashwin and Jadeja.
India crushed Australia by 295 runs in the Perth Test.
India registered a resounding 295-run win over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Despite a shaky start, conceding 150 runs in the first innings, the team made a brilliant comeback.
Stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah was the star with eight wickets, including a fiery opening spell that changed the game.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s stunning 161 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 in the second innings gave Australia a mammoth target of 534 runs.
Australia collapsed under pressure and scored only 104 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) showed some resistance but could not stop the Indian bowlers.
Mohammed Siraj and debutant Harshit Rana assisted Bumrah to close out the game.
The win was a strong statement after India lost the home series 3-0 to New Zealand.
Coach Gautam Gambhir’s India’s bold decision, missing key players like Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, proved successful and set the tone for the rest of the series.
