New evacuation orders have been issued for the Greek seaside town of Nea Makri. Firefighter Battle against deadly wildfires.

More than 700 firefighters and soldiers, supported by 27 special fire response teams, are racing against time to put out as many blazes as possible as winds are expected to pick up again this afternoon.

Meteorologists predicted wind gusts of up to 60 to 70 kilometers per hour (37 to 43 miles per hour), putting thousands of people in the suburbs of Athens at risk.

At least one person has died and thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes as firefighters battle wildfires that have spread across the capital’s northern suburbs.

The massive, fast-spreading wildfire sent flames more than 80 feet high, prompting Greece to call on other countries for help, activating Europe’s Mutual Civil Protection Mechanism.

The fire broke out about 35 kilometres (22 miles) northeast of Athens on Sunday afternoon, burning several homes and businesses and blanketing the city centre in smoke and ash.

An evacuation order was issued for the Greek capital’s suburbs until Monday. Firefighters found bodies in a burnt-out building in the suburb of Brilisia just after midnight.

Foreign aid pours into Greece as wildfires force evacuation of Athens

Firefighters continue to battle wildfires in towns near the Greek capital after fierce blazes erupted on Sunday.

Greece’s Civil Protection Ministry also confirmed that assistance from Spain was “finalising”, while Turkey announced it was sending two planes and a helicopter to help fight the fires.

Animal welfare group calls for more help treating burnt pets

Animal rescue workers called in trained veterinarians to help treat the burnt pets at the center.

Dog’s Voice took to Facebook to ask local residents to donate pet food to feed dozens of animals.

In the post they said: “We continue to accept animals from the affected areas. Currently, six burned animals are being treated at the veterinary hospitals of Animal Doctorz and Glyka Nera, and unfortunately two animals have died from their burns.

“As always, the hospital’s animals are cared for by veterinarians from the Greek Volunteer Veterinary Corps (EDKE) and other private veterinarians.

“But at least one veterinary assistant needs to be here overnight.”

Fears high winds could spread deadly fires in Athens

Meteorologists have warned that the deadly fires in Athens could be fuelled by strong winds.

Local media reported that the winds had died down, helping to contain the massive blaze, but they were still blowing at quite a strong intensity in the capital.

According to Meteo.gr from the National Observatory of Athens, wind gusts in Attica could locally exceed 60-70 km/h. The lunch hour, from noon to 3 p.m., is particularly dangerous.

Thousands evacuated as Greece wildfires rage

Wildfires in Greece have forced the evacuation of three hospitals, including a children’s hospital, two monasteries and a children’s home.

At least 30 push notifications were sent to mobile phones in the area warning people to evacuate.

The Greek Coast Guard has diverted all ferries from nearby ports to islands in the Aegean Sea.

Sports halls and hotels have been converted into shelters.

Authorities said some people refused to leave their homes, later becoming trapped and requiring rescue, putting firefighters’ lives at risk.

The nearest affected area is about 15 kilometres (9 miles) from central Athens, home to the famous Acropolis and other archaeological sites and home to a population of several thousand people.

What are the airlines saying?

Flights to and from Athens Airport are operating normally.

Three flights landed at Eleftherios Venizelos from London Heathrow early Tuesday morning, with several other flights in operation, including easyJet from London Gatwick, Ryanair from Luton and Jet2 from Manchester.

Jet2 told passengers: “We are aware of the wildfires affecting parts of Athens and are monitoring the situation closely.

“In the current situation, Athens Airport remains operational and we plan to operate flights as planned.

“Allow extra time for your trip to the airport as roads may be closed.”

An easyJet spokesperson said: “Our flight schedule to Athens is currently operating as normal, however we continue to closely monitor the situation and advice from the relevant authorities.

“The safety and welfare of our passengers and crew is easyJet’s top priority.”

Greek residents fear ‘dramatic situation’ could escalate as fire destroys homes

Residents evacuated from the northern suburbs of Etna fear the “dramatic situation” could get worse as winds are expected to reach 43 miles per hour.

In scenes never before seen in the Greek capital, people wearing masks fought against flames to prevent their homes from being reduced to ashes.

Suburbs near Nea Penteli and Brilisia were evacuated to protect against fires spreading through the forest.

“It’s the first time there’s been a fire,” said Melina Criselli, a 40-year-old civil servant who lives in a two-story white house in Fatima Halandriou.

“I took the children to a friend’s house for safety,” she told AFP.

Penteli mayor Natasa Kosmopoulou described the situation as “dramatic”, adding: “Schools and houses are burning and you can see the fire moving towards the city hall.”
