Reaction to Jackson Wijaya becoming a beneficial owner Priyanka Vittal, General Counsel, Domtar and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), formerly known as Paper Excellence, said:

“Greenpeace Canada has been sounding the alarm about the relationship between Paper Excellence and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) for several years. Despite Paper Excellence’s continued denials about its relationship with APP, the elusive Jackson Wijaya has become the de facto sole owner of Domtar and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), formerly known as Paper Excellence, making this connection undeniable. This is very concerning to us given APP’s poor environmental and human rights record.

Paper Excellence, rebranded as Domtar, is now the country’s largest logging company, encroaching on many of Canada’s private and publicly traded logging companies. This has happened right under the noses of the Competition Bureau and the Canadian government, leaving us scratching our heads as to how the government and regulators have given complete control of 22 million hectares of forest to a monopoly with so far little transparency. Beyond the obvious economic concerns, our forests are in crisis, and now we have handed over ownership of them to a notoriously private family whose past environmental record leaves us deeply concerned about the future of Canada’s forests and the communities and ecosystems that depend on them. ”
