GST Network on Sunday said monthly filing data for July and August 2017, the first months of introduction of the Goods and Services Tax, has been restored on the portal. GSTN last week said it was implementing a data policy that would only retain taxpayers’ data for seven years. Therefore, GST return data is not available to the taxpayer and is kept in storage for more than 7 years.

Accordingly, the reported data for July 2017 was stored on August 1, 2024, and the data for August 2017 was stored on September 1, 2024.

However, the trade and industry sought more time before implementing this policy so that relevant data can be downloaded from the GST portal for future reference.

In an advisory to taxpayers on Sunday, GSTN said GST refunds have been made available again for 17-18 year olds based on feedback received from industry and industry.

“…Due to the difficulties faced, we have restored the data back to the portal taking into consideration the requests received from the trading side. We recommend downloading and saving the data if required as the retention policy will be re-enforced after providing the data. GSTN provided preliminary information.

Under the GST law, a taxpayer cannot file a GST return more than three years from the due date of filing such return. As per GST Portal data policy, taxpayer data will be retained for only 7 years.

GST came into effect from July 1, 2017.
