Harris to face battlefield ‘inches game’

The New York Times: “While Ms. Harris’s top aides are delighted by her debate performance and Mr. Trump’s inability to mount a coherent, consistent attack, they are trying to tweak the strategy only around the edges. Close advisers say the next step is to increase her campaign’s visibility, which includes retail political work in local communities, increased media appearances and putting herself in front of as many voters as possible in key states. Aides believe that, at bottom, the race remains the same.”

“But Ms. Harris remains a key figure in an unpopular incumbent administration in a country where many voters say they want decisive change and have expressed dissatisfaction with President Biden’s leadership.”

“Her conundrum was summed up in the first question of the debate, when Mrs. Harris was asked whether she thought Americans were better off now than they were four years ago. Instead of giving a direct answer, she talked about growing up in a middle-class family and her plans to help working families, as if she thought it would be unwise to either embrace Mr. Biden too closely or distance herself from him.”
