Plus, three reader comments:
Abbe says of the five joys: “I’m from Minnesota, and I love Tim Walz. As someone who makes a living as an hourly consultant, the biggest takeaway I’ve gotten from his tenure as governor is that Minnesota will pass the Sick & Safe Act of 2024, which will provide accrued paid leave for sick days, family days, and more. As a mom of three, including twins, I can’t tell you how much this has changed my life for the better. It’s an example of the positive, progressive change he’s led. He absolutely supports women and all people in so many ways.”
Julie says of the five joys: “Political hope is an incredible feeling. I know I shouldn’t wait to feel hope (I should instead be involved in action and recovery), but I had forgotten the feeling of joy that comes from deep inside my bones. Isn’t it vulnerable? And it’s really good.”
Betty said five things she found funny: “Hi, Joanna and friends! I know the comments can get really heated whenever politics come up, but in college I was in a fundamentalist cult that had Christian nationalism turned up to 11. Think about it, I was. Homophobic, anti-choice, anti-Semitic, and a massive replacementist. All from a closed community, restricted my movement, and did missionary work two days a week. Coincidentally, that’s when I started reading CoJ, around 2009. I came here for the fashion news and the *glamorous* NYC lifestyle, and I rolled my eyes or mentally resisted what I perceived as ‘liberal indoctrination,’ but I read it anyway, and it stuck with me even though I really didn’t want to. Joanna is so warm and grounded in her beliefs and logic, and as she started inviting more guest writers from diverse backgrounds, I started getting exposed to more different perspectives than I had before. It’s been a few years now, and I’m only officially in the It’s only been four years, but I’ve had a lot of therapy and I’m doing great. I’ve come out as queer to a select few people, including my Jewish fiancé. Five years ago, I would never have done that. And I’ve reformed almost everything about my core values. So thank you, and don’t be discouraged. It’s a long game for some of us. But I hope it won’t take too long.”
