Home, sweet home: Sinner celebrates world number one with ‘special’ hometown visit

I like home.

Jannik Sinner returned to his hometown of Sexten in northern Italy on Tuesday to continue celebrating his rise to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings. The 22-year-old received a warm welcome from many media outlets and local residents.

“It’s always an amazing feeling to return to where I was born and where my family raised me. “It always feels special.” Sinner said ahead of the trip. “Whenever I come home, I always remember my childhood, going skiing and playing with my friends. It’s always special to come back to that place.

“It makes me feel at home, I am very happy and proud of where I come from. It’s truly amazing to give something back to this beautiful place.”

Several former No. 1 employees congratulated Jannik on his accomplishments. Someone said this to him: "Here’s a cool way to look at it. “If there was a tennis tournament in space, Earth would choose you.”

Sinner became the first Italian singles player, male or female, to reach the pinnacle of tennis since computer rankings were introduced in 1973.

“I think the response will be good in Italy. They gave me a lot of energy, especially during difficult moments. It’s truly amazing to share this moment with them and everyone who supports me,” Sinner said. “I have always wanted to give something back to the people who helped me and share my success with them. And now I can share every athlete’s ultimate goal of becoming number one in the world with the whole country. It’s one of the best feelings.”

The world number one was welcomed at a special welcoming ceremony by local officials, including Sexten Mayor Thomas Summerer. Sinner has signed his hometown’s golden book, which he uses only on the most special occasions in town. He was the first to sign.

The superstar also visited Tennishalle Sexten, the tennis center where he first started playing tennis. Sinner met many of the children there to greet him, answered questions from the crowd and also spoke to the media.
