Plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Levine says there is no real alternative to surgical facelift. But for those who want a noticeable skin lift under their eyebrows, chin and neck, or to smooth out the lines and wrinkles of their décolleté without sacrificing a day of downtime, she suggests the following non-invasive treatments: UltherapyIt uses targeted ultrasound energy to stimulate the body’s own collagen and elastin production, resulting in smoother, lifted skin.
The latest version of the in-office device Ultherapy PRIME allows doctors to provide effective, personalized treatment. Safe for all skin types and does not cause sun sensitivity. And the effects from one treatment can last up to a year or more.
Q&A with MD Jennifer Levine
Ultherapy Prime is my favorite treatment to lift the skin on the eyebrows, under the chin, and on the neck.
Ultherapy PRIME uses ultrasound in two ways: First, the treatment itself, a specific form of ultrasound energy called microfocused ultrasound, is delivered to specific layers of tissue through a series of points called thermocoagulation points. These spots are at around 65 degrees Celsius, which is the optimal temperature for collagen and elastin production.
Second, it uses ultrasound technology for real-time visualization. This gives you, as a doctor, an idea from the get-go about how solid a person’s tissue is. For example, we may see that a patient has a thin layer of collagen that is not really dense, and we can then apply energy specifically to that layer.
If multiple areas are treated, the treatment may take up to an hour. As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you may feel heat or tingling, indicating that the process of collagen and elastin production has begun.
The discomfort varies from patient to patient, but I personally find that most people don’t really complain about pain. That said, patient comfort is important in my practice. We can administer local anesthesia and provide additional options to make you more comfortable.
If technically necessary, you can also receive treatment with Ultherapy Prime on the day of the event. There is no downtime.
This means that your skin may appear red at first. Redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience mild swelling, tingling, or tenderness to the touch, but this is mild and temporary.
If you want to see more advanced results by the time of the event, you should plan your treatment 2-3 months in advance. Although you may initially see a slight lifting effect immediately after treatment, the ultimate results of Ultherapy PRIME are seen gradually as the growth of new collagen and elastin progresses.
A single Ultherapy PRIME treatment provides results that can last up to a year or more. Annual treatments can help patients maintain their results over the long term, and at least 30-40% of patients who come to me for Ultherapy end up having the treatment again.
There are no obstacles to performing treatment more frequently. Let’s say you have an event coming up and you can’t have surgery. If so, I think Ulthera Prime treatment will be used more often for patients who want specific results.
Although Ultherapy cannot replicate the results of facial plastic surgery, it is a clinically proven, non-invasive skin lifting alternative. It is a good option for people who are not ready for surgery.
Ultherapy PRIME generally does not limit a patient’s ability to receive other treatments, but it depends on the patient’s specific needs. To achieve the most natural-looking results, we want new collagen and elastin, we want to have some support in the tissue, and we want to prevent hypertonic muscles.
For some patients, Ultherapy Prime may be more effective in combination with complementary treatments, and it is recommended to use non-irritating products at home.
