I’ve enjoyed making my own lipsticks from natural ingredients, but sometimes a girl just needs a little lip gloss. Natural lip gloss can add shine and color to your lips and is simple to make. Introducing how to make a natural lip gloss that provides moisture and nutrition to give your lips some love!
DIY lip gloss
A popular tutorial for making your own lip gloss involves combining petroleum jelly (petroleum jelly) and crayons. Although it’s easy and provides some color, there are a few (major) problems with this formula.
Vaseline is a byproduct of the oil refining (gasoline) industry and has several potential side effects. There is evidence of toxic hydrocarbon contamination and breakdown of skin collagen. These toxins accumulate in the body and can even be passed on through breast milk.
Then there’s the crayon problem…
Although crayons are technically non-toxic, they are not intended for use in skincare (much less ingestion). The pigments used are proprietary and (unlike DIY crayons) there is no way to know what you will get. in fact, Crayola is adamant Consumers should not use crayons in makeup recipes.
So how do you make DIY lip gloss?
Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
There are many safe, natural ingredients you can use to create your own lip care recipes! Lip balm recipes are great for moisturizing your lips, and natural lip gloss can do the same. Carrier oils help moisturize, while beeswax and shea butter provide protection. You can also add a few drops of essential oil for scent and added benefits.
You can add tint or use more clear lip gloss. Beeswax, butter, and oils naturally have some color, so they don’t appear transparent in the container, but they appear transparent on the lips. As for colorants, mica is effective in adding sparkle. Another option is to infuse a carrier oil with alkaline root for red pigment. Beetroot powder is sometimes recommended, but it doesn’t have much color and becomes hard.
How to Make Lip Gloss
Now that you’ve eliminated the crayon/petroleum jelly option, what material do you use? Conventional lip gloss bases use ingredients like Versagel as a base. While it is clear and easily tinted, it is composed of tongue twisters such as Hydrogenated Polyisobutene and Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate. (Yes, I really mean that!)
Even when I put it on my lips, it feels like I don’t want to ingest it at all!
Instead, this recipe uses a carrier oil, beeswax, castor oil, and (optional) alkanet root for color. Castor oil is actually the secret ingredient. Not only does it nourish your lips, it also gives them a glossy sheen. If you don’t want colored options, omit the alkanet root. Sweet almond oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil all work here. I did not use coconut oil because it changes from liquid to solid depending on temperature. This way, you can apply lip gloss even when it’s cold at home.
lip gloss container
I often make lip balm to give as gifts and use twist-up lip balm containers or tins. Lip gloss is much softer and cannot be used in Chapstick containers. Amazon has a lot of lip gloss tubes that come with applicator wands, but I could only find plastic options. Popular squeeze bottle options are also plastic. Instead, I decided to use a glass roller bottle for this lip gloss.
If you don’t have a roller bottle, you can also use a metal tin or glass bottle. Please be careful as the product is soft and may become messy. You can always increase the amount of beeswax to make it harder in the bottle.
How to make lip gloss with scent
Essential oils are an easy and healthy way to add fragrance to your lip gloss. Certain essential oils, such as cinnamon, clove, and lemongrass, can cause irritation and burning in small amounts. Others, such as lime, lemon and bergamot, are phototoxic. Phototoxic oils can cause burns when skin/lips are exposed to sunlight.
Some good options (when properly diluted) that are safe for your lips include:
You can mix and match what scents you like and experiment to create your own scent!
