Hurricane Beryl is expected to hit Jamaica this afternoon as a Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph after a deadly path across Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Authorities declared Jamaica a disaster area and imposed a curfew on Wednesday before Beryl arrived. The storm is expected to impact the Cayman Islands this evening before moving toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

After the storm destroyed buildings and killed several people, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said the damage to Grenada was “unimaginable”.

“We have to start over from scratch,” he said.

Officials said about 98 percent of the buildings on the island, home to 6,000 people, were damaged or destroyed. Four people were confirmed dead locally and three in Venezuela, bringing the death toll to seven.

Beryl strengthened overnight to become the first Category 5 storm ever recorded in the Atlantic before weakening again. Category 4 On Tuesday.

Troops deployed to Mexico to prepare for Hurricane Beryl on Thursday
