The Navy Recognition website, which specializes in military issues, reported that India plans to build new Kalvari-type submarines for its military.
According to the website, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is currently in talks to build three new Kalvari submarines for the Indian Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army. These submarines will be larger, feature more advanced technology and have a longer range than the Kalvari submarines they have produced previously.
In 2005, the Indian Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and the French Naval Group to develop six Kalvari submarines for the Indian Army. The first submarine of this type was delivered to the Army in 2017, the second in 2019, and the third was also delivered. Submarine No. 4 has been deployed to the Army since 2021, Submarine No. 5 was commissioned last year, and Submarine No. 6 was launched in 2020 and is currently being tested.
The Kalvari submarine is approximately 67.5 m long, 6.2 m wide, and displaces 1,775 tons. She can carry a crew of 44 people and she can travel at a speed of 20 knots. These submarines can be used for military search and reconnaissance operations, operations to destroy enemy submarines and ships, and coastal protection. The military fleet was also equipped with 533 mm SUT 266 torpedoes and SM-39 anti-ship missiles.
