The Atlanta Falcons went 7-10 last season, but they believe they are ready to make the NFL playoffs this season.

They made a big bet on quarterback Kirk Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, signing him to a four-year, $180 million contract.

This week, Atlanta acquired star pass rusher Matthew Judon, whose contract was in limbo with the New England Patriots, and has now signed veteran safety Justin Simmons, a two-time Pro Bowler from the Denver Broncos, to a one-year deal.

Broncos reporter Benjamin Albright, Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and cornerback AJ Terrell helped facilitate Simmons’ move to Atlanta.

Simmons was released by the Broncos in March after recording eight passes defended, three interceptions and 70 total tackles (53 solo tackles) in 2023, earning him Pro Bowl eligibility.

The 30-year-old should have enough power to help Atlanta reach the postseason for the first time since 2017, a year after they blew a 25-point lead in the Super Bowl.

Simmons will now be paired with Jesse Bates III to form one of the best safety duos in the NFL.

Bates was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2023, his first season with the Falcons, posting impressive numbers with 11 passes defended, six interceptions and 132 total tackles (89 solo).

Of course, it will be up to Cousins, who will soon be 36, to help the Falcons get back to their best this season after tearing his Achilles tendon last season with the Minnesota Vikings.
