Lille star and former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has opened up about leaving Old Trafford and how it helped him get to where he is today.

Gomez recently received his first call-up to the England squad for the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

He was selected by Lee Carsley, who replaced Gareth Southgate as manager, and felt Gomez’s qualities and unique technical attributes would make him a suitable addition to the team.

Gomez made his United debut seven years ago against Crystal Palace, replacing Wayne Rooney. At the time, Gomez made history by becoming the youngest player ever to represent the Red Devils, aged 16 years and 263 days.

The 24-year-old left his former club in 2020 to sign for Lille, before being loaned to Portuguese club Boavista for the 2020/21 season.

Gomez has enjoyed success in France, cementing his status as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1.

No player in France’s Ligue 1 last season had more assists than Gomez’s eight. He ranked second and sixth for big chances created and opposition half-passes completed respectively.
