Jamal Adams is looking for a new football home.
The Lions cut the controversial former Jets safety from their practice squad on Wednesday, a month after he joined the organization.
He was with the Titans early in the season, but was cut there as well, and now the three-time Pro Bowler is looking for a team to take a flyer on him once again for next season.
Adams saw playing time sparingly during his time with the Lions, participating in two games on a practice squad promotion and being on the field for just 20 defensive snaps in Detroit.
This news comes just days after an interview was published in which Adam expressed excitement about the opportunity he has in Detroit with the Lions.
“It’s definitely a golden opportunity.” Adams told football reporter Tyler Dunne.. “And then after I asked for my release from Tennessee, I went home and just relaxed. I just left and wanted to clear my mind and make sure I was in it for the right reasons and to pursue my purpose and continue my career. And of course, I sat at home for weeks and just trained all the time.”
He added: “And obviously I got the call (from Detroit), which was a no-brainer for me. I was like, ‘Hey, this is a really great opportunity. A chance to chase the ring.’ That’s it, buddy.”
Adams’ career has never been the same since he requested a trade from the Jets, the organization that drafted him sixth overall in 2017, and granted that request in 2020.
Parting ways with the organization made him a polarizing figure in recent franchise history, and since the trade, Adams’ career has been plagued by inconsistent play and injuries.
Adams spent four years with the Seahawks and suffered a torn quad tendon in 2022 that ended his season in Week 1 and seemed like a major setback for him.
He was released in the 2024 offseason and briefly moved to Tennessee.
Adams recently expressed regret over the Jets’ trade request.
“[Jets] “Fans, I didn’t know I would hurt you so much,” he said. “I had no idea I had that much influence. And obviously, as I got older, I started to realize, ‘Bro, you have it all.’ You have everything but victory. You had everything else. Everything a player could ask for.’ But it didn’t work for me. I asked for a trade. And looking back now, I tell myself, ‘Let’s not judge emotionally.’ “
