Yannick Sinner withdrew from the Paris Olympics on Wednesday after being diagnosed with tonsillitis.

“I am very sad and disappointed. Competing at the Olympics was one of my main goals this season,” Sinner said in a statement. “I was really looking forward to returning to Roland Garros and representing my country at this prestigious event. However, after seeing the doctor on Tuesday and waiting another day to see if my condition would improve, unfortunately it has worsened.”

Sinner began experiencing symptoms on Monday evening after a week of practice in Monaco. The PIF ATP No. 1 consulted his team of doctors and was strongly advised to withdraw.

“As I said, this is disappointing for me and I hope to be able to compete at the Olympics in the future. I was looking forward to competing with my teammates and the Italian team, but for now I guess I will have to wait,” Sinner said. “Following the advice of my medical team, I will now take some time to rest and fully recover. I wish the entire Italian team all the best for this important event and I hope to come back stronger in the future.”
