Garrett Wilson has seen rumors that the Jets might be interested in signing Raiders wideout Davante Adams, and he would welcome him into the receivers room.
“I get it. I’m excited. I agree with everything,” Wilson said Friday at the Garrett Wilson Youth Soccer Camp in Morristown, N.J. “Anybody I can bring into the facility to help this team win games, I agree with, and he’s one of them.”
The Adams rumors have been circulating ever since the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers last year.
The Jets tried to sign Adams before last season and again at the trade deadline, but the Raiders were unwilling to trade him.
There’s no indication anything has changed, but talk of Adams heated up again this week after Rodgers said Thursday at a golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, “I love Davante. I’d love to play with him again.”
Wilson is currently gearing up for a season where he will be the Jets’ clear No. 1 receiver, and training camp is ready to begin.
The Jets’ first practice is on July 24th.
“I just want to get started,” Wilson said. “I just want to get started. I’m nervous. Every time we step on the field, every time I get a chance to go out there and play, it’s a blessing. I just want another chance to redeem ourselves a little bit.”
Wilson said he still regrets last year’s 7-10 record and wants to show the Jets are a better team than that.
“We played the way we played,” Wilson said. “The beauty of it is we got another chance this year. I feel like we needed it. [redeem myself] little.”
Wilson performed well in his first two seasons despite being drafted by multiple teams at quarterback.
But winning was not easy.
Wilson went 14-20 in his first two years, a simple definition of a successful season.
Asked what success looks like this year, Wilson said, “We’re in the playoffs.”
If the Jets are to make the playoffs, Wilson knows he has to perform.
“I feel like I’m part of a team that has to be good to win, and I’m ready for that,” Wilson said. “If we can win the game the way I think we should, the rest will take care of itself.”
Wilson said he spoke with Rodgers during the offseason after the team concluded its spring offseason program.
They’re not together yet, but Wilson is confident they’ll join forces at camp.
“We both had productive offseasons, and that’s important,” he said. “We’ll pick up training camp right where we left off.”
The Jets’ offense could be vastly improved this year with a healthy Rodgers and Mike Williams opposite Wilson, and a rebuilt offensive line.
“It’s going to be as good as we can go out there and produce,” Wilson said. “We have a chance to do everything. We had a really good OTA. Sunday is a different story. We have to go out there and play football and do well. That’s our goal. I think we’ll do it, but we have to go out there and do it.”
Wilson practiced Friday at the Delbarton School in Morristown with about 500 kids wearing T-shirts with his No. 5 on them.
“That’s what it’s all about,” Wilson said. “It’s all about being able to give back to the community that supports you and makes you who you are. I knew at that age how much this meant to me. For them to be able to do this and have the level of engagement that we have is more special to me than what they do.”
