The Jets will debut a new kicker Thursday night against the Texans. We’re not sure who yet.
The team placed struggling kicker Greg Zuerlein on injured reserve Wednesday, a day after he appeared on the injury report.
They signed Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader to the practice squad, one of six kickers who played for the Jets.
One of them is expected to be promoted before kick-off on Thursday.
Zuerlein sealed his fate on Sunday when he missed a 44-yard field goal and forced an extra point in a 25-22 loss to the Patriots.
It was the latest bad day for Zuerlein, who has missed six field goals this season.
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich did not commit to Zuerlein after the game and the Jets held a tryout Tuesday at MetLife Stadium.
“I hope the best man gets kicked,” Ulbrich said Tuesday.
It’s been a surprising fall for Zuerlein, who has been the Jets’ reliable kicker the past two seasons.
He only missed three field goals last year.
The Jets rewarded him this offseason with a two-year, $8.4 million contract that included $4.2 million guaranteed.
Zuerlein struggled in the preseason game against the Giants, missing two kicks, and that continued into the season. He missed big kicks in three of the Jets’ losses.
Patterson has made 88% of his field goals (59 of 67) with the Lions, Jaguars and Browns.
Shrader only kicked in one game and had no field goal attempts.
He has made all three extra points attempted for the Colts in one game this season.
The Jets have the following players ruled out for Thursday’s game: G Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), LB CJ Mosley (neck), WR Allen Lazard (chest), S Tony Adams (hamstring), S Ashtyn Davis (concussion) and DT Lek. Potu (knee). LB Chazz Surratt (heel), OT Morgan Moses (knee) and TE Kenny Yeboah (abdominal) are all questionable.
The Jets signed LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball to their active roster.
This is a sign that Mosley could be out for an extended period of time.
The Jets released safety Jaylen Key from the practice squad.
