My fellow Americans,
Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation.
Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our country, lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided desperately needed treatment for a million veterans who have been exposed to toxic substances. We’ve passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We’ve appointed the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court. And we’ve passed the most important climate bill in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than it is today.
I know none of this could have happened without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We protected and preserved democracy. And we revived and strengthened alliances around the world.
Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life, and while it was my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step aside and focus solely on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
I will tell the nation more about my decision later this week.
Now, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who worked so hard to re-elect me. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an outstanding partner in all of this. And I want to express my sincere gratitude for the faith and trust that the American people have shown in me.
I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America cannot do when we come together. We must remember that we are the United States of America.
