Arne Slot has a squad full of amazing players and that means he often has to make a lot of choices with the team, but this weekend could be the biggest decision of his short tenure as our manager.
John Aldridge spoke exclusively to Ladbrokes, the official betting partner of Liverpool FC: “If Alisson is healthy, I still think the manager should keep hold of Kelleher. Ali did nothing wrong and I think he will recognize the situation.
“He’ll be thinking, ‘I can’t come back to this team’ and it’s hard to say that because he’s so good.
“It will be a very difficult decision for Arne to make. We’ll see what happens. But I think Kelleher should be number one. I’m sure many people will disagree with me.
“If you get injured and someone takes your place and they score a goal, you can’t get your place back, regardless of who you are.
“So we used to play and get cortisone shots to keep our seats! It may not sound good, but it’s exactly what you had to do. Kelleher was amazing.”
It would be a considerable ask for the Dutchman to leave Alisson Becker on the bench if he is fit enough to feature against Southampton this weekend.
Caoimhin Kelleher has been in good form for Liverpool this season.
After returning to training, many will assume our No.1 will make an immediate return to St Mary’s. However, it appears the former striker will disagree with the decision.
Despite these calls, the Dutchman has already confirmed that our number 62 will not be available in the starting line-up once the opposition is fully fit, something that looks likely to happen against the newly promoted club.
It’s just a testament to the academy graduate’s talent that the gap between him and the world’s best at his profession is so small that many people don’t even notice when the former Roman is gone.
So if the Irishman returns to the bench immediately, a summer move is likely. Few people can fault him for what he wants.
