Justina Blakeney x Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival!

The Hollywood Bowl is probably one of my favorite places in Los Angeles. Music, nature and creativity swirl outdoors under the stars. Who wouldn’t love that?! You can imagine how excited I was when the Hollywood Bowl asked me to design it. 2023 Jazz Festival Prizes!!! It was a dream-like collaboration. I was inspired and immediately started sketching with a black Sharpie. Although I never mind color, I wanted to conceptualize the design in black and white to first find out what appealed to me graphically. I wanted to include elements representing the music, artists, audiences, and LA iconography to give the design a sense of place. Here are some of my early sketches.

We ultimately chose these (below) and added other elements and fun, bright colors to make the design stand out! My design is inspired by the free-form, improvisatory nature of jazz music and the natural elements that symbolize Los Angeles and the Hollywood Bowl, including palm trees, sunlight, seashells, and stars. I wanted the art to represent not only the music and the musicians, but also the community. The dots pouring out of the Hollywood Bowl shell represent the audience. The response and response between the audience and performers explodes into a magical production. Hand-drawn letters, geometric shapes, and spirals are reminiscent of the Art Deco style that was prevalent during the rise of jazz. And the funky, fun, good vibes that the art exudes – that’s the “Justina Spice” I can’t help but sprinkle in everything I do! I hope it makes you want to dance!

The team at Hollywood Bowl (shout out to Janice Bartczak and Melissa Achten!!) is small but mighty, just like our team at Jungalow. It was really cool to work with a team as nimble as ours and iterate on the design as we went along. Janice and Melissa attended the Jungalow pop-up launch party (more on that in the next blog post!) and invited us to the Jazz Festival a few days later. We are grateful to be able to foster a more creative community!

It was a really fun trip where we got to see so many beautiful people walking around wearing merchandise! Art and creativity seemed to connect us all. The Hollywood Bowl team also had the bright idea of adding BUCKET HATS to their merchandise lineup! Isn’t it just so cute?!?! PS sold out in 4 hours!!!

It was truly surreal to see my designs on iconic landmarks in Los Angeles. Still floating on a cloud during the whole experience!!!

I’m so grateful to the Hollywood Bowl for this opportunity and for inviting me and my family to this year’s Jazz Festival! Check out the full collection here.
