Lactalis plans to invest in Colombian dairy production facility

Lactalis has confirmed plans to invest €3 million ($3.2 million) in one of its three production facilities in Colombia.

The French-headquartered dairy giant said its plant in Medellín, Antioquia, which produces UHT milk, cream and dairy desserts, has been earmarked for investment in plant modernization.

Lactalis plans to increase the UHT milk storage capacity of its Medellin plant, convert to automated machines for pasteurizing dairy products, and update its disinfection and sterilization lines. It also wants to convert its heating system from a carbon-emitting boiler to gas.

The investment plan was revealed by Juan Velásquez, CEO of Lactalis operations in Colombia, in an interview with the local edition. Forbes.

Confirmed Just Food According to Lactalis, the €3 million investment in Medellín is part of a €4 million project underway in Colombia this year. Lactalis has committed to investing €5 million a year in the site, Velásquez said. Forbes.

In addition to the Medellín facility, Lactalis confirmed that it operates a powdered milk plant in Cerreté, Cordoba, and a plant in Chia, Cundinamarca, producing refrigerated dairy products, raw milk and powdered milk, and cream.

The company said it supplies the Parmalat and Proleche brands in Colombia, as well as the Zymil range and its own brand Lactalis, adding that the President and Kraft dairy brands are also imported into Colombia.

Velazquez said Forbes Lactalis had sales of 600 billion pesos ($148.7 million) last year and aims to increase that by 8 percent this year.

“This year we expect to invest 4 million euros in industry and quality. Since 2021, we have invested an average of 4 million euros in Colombia. That means we have already invested about 64 billion euros,” he said.

Regarding the Medellín plant, Velazquez added: “We are trying to reach European standards, so we have to improve in terms of machinery, quality and training.

“To this end, in our long-term strategic investment plan, we plan to invest approximately 5 million euros in Colombia every year.”

Meanwhile, Lactalis confirmed that its sales growth target for this year is driven by new product launches and plans to increase sales of its President brand.
